Mission Statement: To meet the needs of Edgartown seniors while promoting vital aging, growing older with dignity, independence and health.

The Edgartown Council on Aging, known as the Anchors, provides health and wellness programs, information and referral, recreation and social programs, outreach, and volunteer opportunities.

The outreach worker is available for an appointment at the Anchors or in the home. The outreach worker can help provide support and services for elder needs.

The Edgartown Council on Aging supports seniors with a range of on-site services as well as referrals to outside services, including connecting seniors with local scout troops for voluntary snow shoveling services.

Caregiver and Family Support:  The Outreach Department at the Edgartown Council on Aging serves Edgartown seniors and their families, and is available for consultations and referrals. Outreach can provide general information on resources or specific, individualized help during times of need. Outreach assistance can be instrumental in securing services and support.

Consumer Advocacy:  The Edgartown Council on Aging Outreach Department maintains a list of consumer advocate groups and will assist seniors in making contact with public services that may benefit them.

Elder Abuse and Neglect:  The Edgartown Council on Aging is a mandated reporter, meaning staff members must report suspicion of elder abuse or self-neglect to Protective Services.  Staff members are also available to assist individuals in reporting an event of elder abuse or self-neglect that may have been witnessed.

Employment and Volunteering:  The Edgartown Council on Aging offers volunteer opportunities, e.g., receptionist, kitchen aide and friendly home visitor.

Financial Resources: The Edgartown Council on Aging offers assistance in helping seniors apply for governmental programs, including fuel assistance, food stamps, and no-cost phone services.  The staff is available to discuss budgeting issues and makes referrals to organizations that can be of further assistance.

Food and Nutrition:  The Edgartown Council on Aging offers home cooked lunches on Tuesdays and Fridays. They provide homemade, frozen soups to-go and are the distributors of surplus food. There is also a small food pantry. Supplies are delivered to all centers on the fourth Friday of the month.

Health and Wellness:  The Edgartown Council on Aging offers fitness opportunities, such as exercise classes, a walking group and bike rides.  Please call the Council on Aging for more details or visit its website at edgartowncoa.com.

Meal Program: $2.00 Tuesday Lunch and $5.00 Friday Cafe. Our lunches are fun, freshly prepared, fantastic and affordable! On Tuesdays at noon a sandwich is served with soup or salad and dessert and on Fridays at noon, an entree is served with soup or salad and dessert. Please call 24 hours in advance for a reservation. Feel free to bring your own container if you wish to take home leftovers. All generations welcome – no need to be over 50!

Home Care Services:  The Edgartown Council on Aging helps connect families with agencies that can provide in-home care and homemaking. The staff also maintains a list of unendorsed private home care providers, 24-hour caregivers, and home care agencies.

Housing: The Edgartown Council on Aging staff meets with individuals and families to discuss housing options that are available to them on the island. They can provide guidance to appropriate housing agencies and help with the application process.

Legal Assistance:  Pro-bono elder attorney, Tom Kossman, travels to the island every month and provides advice, counsel, and referral to island seniors who are planning for their futures or other legal issues. There is a list of legal services available for low-income seniors.

Social and Educational Opportunities:  The Edgartown Council on Aging offers numerous social and educational events and programs including community lunches on Tuesdays and Fridays, exercise classes, men’s and women’s book groups, a poetry group, a conversation group, a bowling league, off-island trips and much more.

Transportation:  The Edgartown Council on Aging can help families decide upon the transportation options that best suit their needs. They can facilitate the application process for the Lift and ParaTransit.
